Copy-on Ingest versus In-place Ingest in Zoom

In-place ingest workflow is efficient as it does not perform any additional media copy, does not automatically create the destination folder path, in Zoom, to your current media store folder.

In-place Ingest

In-place ingest allows you to ingest media directly from your TPM to the Zoom repository. The In-place-Ingest feature provides the following benefits:

  • Avoid any extra copies on the desktop, for the quickest way to ingest files into Zoom
  • Transfer camera cards, image sequences, high-res clips straight to the cloud using the Zoom S3 Transfer Manager Hub

When you use In-place Ingest you are trading speed of copying over the ease of organizing the files automatically in Zoom.

In other words, unlike Copy-on Ingest flow where Zoom creates the sub-folders under a designated media folder also referred to as TPM aka Third Party Mount Point folder, you are responsible for creating the folder structure in the TPM that mirrors the destination folder structure in Zoom repository.

Zoom simply respects the sub-folder structure in TPM and clones the same folder structure to the high-res media store in the cloud (AWS S3) or on an on-premise shared storage such as a SAN

Copy-on Ingest

Copy-on ingest workflow enables Zoom to organize your media store (TPM). You don’t own it, Zoom does. When you ingest a project with links to media or ingest the raw media, Zoom will automatically copy the high-res media to the TPM. It will also create any subfolders under the TPM that mirror the destination folder in the Zoom repository.

Downside is, it does entail an extra copy from the source folder to the TPM. This is ok for a day to day project but if you are migrating a large set of project folders, the extra copy might slow you down.

With copy-on ingest, when you check-in via the Zoom Check-in app or the plugins, high-res media is first copied to the TPM, then deleted in the source folder. After this move, the links in a project are automatically resolved to the media files in the TPM by the Zoom plugins such as our Adobe CC Extensions.

The Copy-on Ingest feature provides the following benefits:

  • No need to manually create folder structure under the TPM to mirror the folder structure in the Zoom repository
  • Zoom plugin can automatically fix links after moving the media files from source folder to the TPM
In-place Ingest Copy-on Ingest
Best for ingesting raw media or image sequences with size > 20GB Best for day-to-day sync of project files < 20GB
You are responsible for creating the folder structure in the TPM that mirrors the destination folder structure in Zoom repository. No need to manually create folder structure under the TPM to mirror the folder structure in the Zoom repository
Project links to the media in TPM do not need to be changed after you sync the project file to the Zoom repository Project links to the media before copying to the TPM, will need to be changed after you sync the project file to the Zoom repository. Zoom plugins can do this automatically though.
